The churches of Kauhava area
Kauhava has four beautiful and very different churches. In 2009, a parish merger was implemented, forming the Kauhava regional parish and the chapel parishes of Alahärmä, Kortesjärvi and Ylihärmä. The Kauhava Regional Parish is responsible for parish activities in the Kauhava area.
Kauhava Church was completed in 1925 and was designed by architect Josef Stenbäck. The church is red brick and represents the neo-Gothic style.
Address: Kirkkotie 5, Kauhava
Alahärmä Church was inaugurated on the first Advent in 1903. The church was designed by architect Josef Stenbäck and built by master builder S. Birling from Kurikka with the assistance of stonemasons from Härmä. The church is a synthesis of ecclesiastical Gothic and national romanticism in style.
Address: Härmäntie 29, Alahärmä.
Kortesjärvi Church was built by the well-known church builder Jaakko (Jacob) Rijf from Pietarsaari. He was the first church builder in Finland to receive an academy education. The Kortesjärvi church, completed in 1792, is in the Gustavian neoclassical style.
Address: Jääkärintie 65, Kortesjärvi.
The first church drawings for Ylihärmä Church were drawn up by church builder Antti Hakola in 1776, but the actual designer and implementer was his son Kaappo Hakola. The church represents an authentic folk wooden style. Ylihärmä Church is very similar to Kuortane Church, Antti Hakola’s masterpiece.
Address: Päämajantie 29, Ylihärmä.
