Horse-drawn hearses
In Kauhava, a unique piece of local history is on display: old, horse-drawn funeral wagons. These beautifully restored wagons are now visible in a glass display case, telling their own story of Kauhava’s past. In February 1933, 200 Finnish marks were donated from the women’s section fund of the Alakylä Farmers’ Association for the acquisition of these funeral wagons. The horse-drawn wagons, acquired at the expense of the Farmers’ Association and its women’s section, were handcrafted in Alavus by the Etelä-Pohjanmaan Ajokalukouluyhdistys ry (South Ostrobothnian Carriage School Association). The final journey for many Kauhava residents concluded with a ride in these very wagons.
The wagons were restored during a course at Järvilakeus Community College in 2018 and have since found their rightful place in a specially built display case in the yard of Iisakki Järvenpää’s knife factory. The display case, where the wagons now rest, was constructed through volunteer efforts, and its doors are restored old doors from the local chapel – adding another interesting layer to the exhibit. The wagons’ most recent “journey” into the display case was pulled by “Kööringin Jaska,” which is also part of their unique story.
The funeral wagons are visible year-round.
